"What caused the illegal poaching is poor law enforcement and supervision, not the legal trade. Actually, the tusks from elephants' natural deaths are sufficient to supply the Chinese market. "China legally imported 62 tons of ivory from African countries under an international treaty signed in 2008. Legal trading does not lead to poaching. China only permits 37 companies to manufacture ivory products and 145 to sell the products. They use no more than 5,000 kg of legal ivory every year."
