Chinese technology companies are making great efforts to build a safer world -especially in countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative- officials and experts said on Thursday at the Nuctech 2018 Innovation Conference on Security Screening Technologies.

Founded in 1997, Nuctech Co Ltd is an advanced security and inspection solution and services supplier.

The company provides advanced technology and products - from explosive and drug detectors to vehicle inspection systems - and integrates solutions in the security inspection industry in many areas.

These include civil aviation, customs, the railways, logistics and the judiciary in over 150 countries and regions in the world.

"Currently, the world is facing a profound change. The global security situation is complicated," said Nuctech Chairman Chen Zhiqiang.

"The global economy faces instability, uncertainty and threats of protectionism. We face many difficulties and challenges," Chen added.

As a leader in the security industry, Nuctech has businesses in more than 150 counties around the world, including 61 involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. It aims to help the world cope with challenges - with security technology, trade and customs facilitation, and ports control, Chen said.

An integrated system created by Nuctech has been used to help with customs risks in counties including Kazakhstan, Slovakia and Thailand, according to staff in the company.

The system helps ensure customs security, utilizing electronic cargo information, and performs non-intrusive inspections to check high-risk containers and cargoes, employees said.

"Technology is essential in border and supply chain security," said Ahmad Jailani Bin Muhamed Yunus, deputy director of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

He said that cargo inspections were a critical aspect of safeguarding supply chain security and protecting society against organized transnational crimes.

"We are living in a fast-changing world - a world assailed by political, ethnic and religious conflicts and environmental degradation," said Dana Meager, state secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic.

"The more we become global from the point of view of commercial transactions and culturally related cooperation, the more we need to think about global cooperation in customs matters."

She said an "utmost challenge" for customs authorities all over the world was balancing facilitating trade with the demands of safety.

The problem could be solved through the use of proper technical solutions and reliable devices, she said.

"The Belt and Road Initiative and cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong Subregion is expected to bridge the infrastructure gap and thus accelerate economic growth," said Kun Nhem, director of the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia.

Since 2014, Cambodia has seized several ivory tusks with the help of the Nuctech's technology.

The increasing need for risk control in trade would require more creative technology in daily operations, he said.
