Brexit to be debated during Irish presidential election

Ireland goes to the polls to elect a president on Oct 26. Six candidates will contest the election, in which the incumbent, Michael Higgins, is seeking a second seven-year term.

The impact on the country of Britain's withdrawal from the European Union will undoubtedly come up in debate, as will the growing prospect of Irish reunification, which some are calling for a referendum on within the next president's tenure.

Changes in the role of president will also come up, with issues around presidential finances and duties already being discussed. Some candidates have suggested reducing the presidential term from seven years to five.

Candidates are likely to discuss extending voting rights for presidential elections to Irish citizens abroad. A referendum on this issue is expected to be held next year.
