Editor's note: Laurence Brahm first came to China as a university exchange student from the US in 1981 and has spent much of the past three and a half decades living and working in China. He is a lawyer, an economist and founding chairman of the Himalayan Consensus. He is also an award-winning documentary film director specializing in extreme Himalayan expeditions. His latest film Searching for the Lotus-Born Master (2018) has received a dozen international film festival awards and accolades.

The sixth manifestation is Shakya Sengye, the Lotus-Born Master became the second Buddha. While he took his Buddhist vows at Bodhgaya. Scholars believe the enlightenment cave is located at Yangleshou in Pharping, a village in the mountains just outside the Kathmandu valley. There are two famous caves there. One is called the Asura cave, where the Lotus-Born Master tamed the demons. The other cave is located at a Naga temple, where he attained complete enlightenment.

Historically he stayed in Pharping with his Nepalese consort Shakya Devi. Our expedition learned that she was a princess from the Nepalese kingdom of Patan. When her mother, the queen died, the new queen, her step mother, effectively kicked her out of the palace. She went to Pharping, which was already a center of Shakti worship. And she became as Yogini. The Lotus-Born Master was looking for her. Together, with consort practice, they perfected the magic of the ritual dagger, called Phurba.
