The Przewalski's horse, named after its Russian discoverer, is an endangered species native to the desert grassland of Central Asia. There are about 2,000 Przewalski's horses in the world today. Przewalski's horses are now under the country's strict protection.

China started a breeding program in 1985 using 24 horses brought back from Europe to repopulate the subspecies.

A total of 703 foals have been born in Xinjiang since 1986.

Since 2001, 110 Przewalski's horses have been released back into the wild.
