The Francois' langur, a first-class protected wild animal in China, is mainly found in Guizhou province and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, with scattered populations in countries including Vietnam and Laos. The global population is only around 2,000, and the monkey is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The South China Karst, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a key habitat for Francois' langurs, and the region's Guizhou Mayang River National Nature Reserve offers them an ideal home. The protection of the reserve's ecosystem over the past 30 years has seen the number of Francois' langurs there double to over 700, in 72 groups.
