China will hold its first National Conference on Social Civility in Rural Areas from Oct 29 to 30 in Yan'an, Shaanxi province, to promote moral progress and cultural vitality in the countryside, officials said on Thursday.

The event, themed Civility Makes Rural Life Better, aims to strengthen public participation, exchange experiences, and showcase achievements in promoting rural civility, said Hu Kaihong, Vice-Minister of the Central Office of Cultural and Ethical Progress.

"Cultivating civility in rural areas is a key part of advancing rural vitalization and meeting farmers' growing spiritual and cultural needs," Hu said.

Jointly hosted by the office, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the authorities of Shaanxi province, the conference will include a plenary session and four subforums focused on reforming outdated village customs, preserving rural cultural heritage, and developing local cultural and sports programs.

A second segment will showcase outstanding cultural and artistic performances, highlighting the transformation of traditional customs and creative community efforts. On Oct 28, a day before the conference opens, a "Village BA" rural basketball match will be held to display the vitality of rural culture and sports.

Hu said the conference will emphasize the central role of rural residents in fostering civility. Many participants will come from the grassroots, including village Party secretaries, rural youth and local cultural leaders, to share successful practices and experiences.

The event will also focus on addressing issues such as extravagant weddings, excessive bride prices and lavish banquets. "These are real concerns in some areas. We hope to explore practical solutions and promote new customs during the conference," Hu said.
