China's major airlines announced special refund and rebooking arrangements for Japan-bound passengers on Saturday, following a security alert from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chinese embassies in Japan. The alert advised Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan due to rising safety concerns and political tensions.

The ministry and diplomatic missions cited intensified public security issues in Japan, including multiple violent incidents involving Chinese nationals and unsolved cases. They also mentioned provocative remarks by Japanese leaders on Taiwan, which have strained people-to-people exchanges and increased risks to Chinese citizens' safety.

In response, airlines such as Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines offered free refunds or itinerary changes for eligible tickets on Japan-related routes through Dec 31. Passengers who purchased or reissued tickets before midday Saturday and whose unused segments involve travel to or from major Japanese cities — including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Hiroshima and Okinawa — during the specified period can apply for free processing. This applies to flights operated by the airlines and certain codeshare services, covering both standard and mileage-redemption tickets. Requests should be submitted after 00:00 on Saturday, according to each airline's conditions.

The airlines stated that these temporary arrangements aim to provide flexibility for passengers adjusting their plans following the government's travel warning. This move highlights the industry's response to geopolitical and security developments.

Chinese authorities reminded citizens in Japan to monitor local safety conditions, enhance personal protection, and seek assistance from police or Chinese diplomatic missions in emergencies.
