Layers of color

Dai Ying's paintings reveal the strength of her lifelong grounding in classical Chinese painting, which she began studying as a child. Years of training have given her solid technique and a command over color, while her experiences at home and abroad also motivate her to experiment with paper and silk, two major mediums of classical Chinese painting.

Her ongoing exhibition at the National Art Museum of China, titled Endless Life, shows her efforts to introduce unconventional materials into ink art. She blends oil paints and acrylics with mineral pigments to build dense layers of color, amplifying the expressive power of the work.

Also on show is Mother, an installation made of pink strips of traditional xuan paper, ceramics, cloth, and stainless steel resembling a woman's womb and symbolizing the cycle of life. The exhibition runs until Dec 5.
