Canadian man praises China's medical efficiency after knee surgery in Yichang

Guy Francis Bennett, from Canada, recently got his knees treated in Yichang, Hubei province, and gave a thumbs-up to the efficiency and professionalism of the medical workers.

Two months ago, Bennett, 66, was injured during a soccer match when he tore his meniscus in his right knee.

After consulting a hospital in Vancouver, he was told he would have to wait at least a year for a routine minimally invasive surgery. Fearing the prolonged wait would worsen his condition and disrupt his work and daily life, he grew anxious.

As he had already planned a trip to his wife's hometown in Yichang, Bennett decided to seek medical treatment there in mid-March. Family friends recommended he visit Wu Huang, a doctor of orthopedics at the Yichang Second People's Hospital.

He said he had doubts at first, but Wu's expertise put their minds at ease. The doctor had served as a visiting scholar in the United Kingdom. When Wu explained conservative treatment and minimally invasive surgical options to him in English, the Canadian made up his mind: "I trust Dr. Wu, and I trust China even more."

Bennett was admitted to the hospital on March 10, and the next day, Wu and his medical team performed arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery. During the procedure, doctors also found a meniscus tear in his left knee and repaired it at the same time, resolving issues in both knees in a single operation that lasted one and a half hours.

About six hours following the procedure, Bennett was able to walk. By the third day after surgery, his knee had no obvious pain; he moved freely and walked without restrictions.

He said the recovery was far faster than expected, and the medical costs were much lower than he thought. He and his wife were highly satisfied with the outcome and posted a video on social media sharing their medical experience in China.

"Now I have two new knees!" he said in Chinese.

Bennett works as a journalist, film producer, and investor. He has played soccer all his life, and said he is looking forward to returning to the field soon.

According to Wu, China's medical technology is on par with that of developed Western countries in many fields, and even surpasses them in some areas. Domestic hospitals are equipped with advanced medical devices and staffed by skilled, experienced expert teams. "Especially in surgical care, medical professionals have extensive clinical experience and can deliver high-quality, efficient medical services to every patient," he said.
