The United Nations' top representative in Kenya has underlined the need to embrace cultural diversity and multilingualism as key drivers of global unity and cooperation.

Speaking during the celebration of this year's UN Chinese Language Day in Nairobi on Monday, Zainab Hawa Bangura, director-general of the UN office in Nairobi, reiterated that language remains a vital channel for dialogue.

The event, themed "Characters endure, civilizations shine," focused on calligraphy, one of the highest forms of art in China that has been practiced for thousands of years.

The ceremony, attended by diplomats, UN officials and students, also featured performances that blended Chinese and Kenyan cultures, symbolizing deepening cultural and educational ties between the two nations.

China's Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, while encouraging better multilateral collaboration, described Mandarin as a unifying tool in today's world.

She noted that more Kenyans are learning the language, adding that Chinese is becoming a golden key to unlocking opportunities in Africa and in Kenya.

"Calligraphy embodies the value of harmony in diversity," said Guo, urging inclusivity and the rejection of isolationism.
