A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday reiterated adherence to the one-China principle in handling Taiwan's external exchanges, calling on relevant countries to "stand on the right side of history".

Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a press conference in response to the planned visit of Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te to Eswatini later this month.

"We firmly oppose any actions aimed at creating 'two Chinas', 'one China, one Taiwan', or promoting 'Taiwan independence' on the international stage," Chen said. He urged the countries concerned to recognize the broader global trend, correct erroneous policies, and stand on the right side of history.

Lai will visit Eswatini from April 22 to 26, according to an announcement from his office. Eswatini is the only African country that maintains "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan, which were established in 1968.

Meanwhile, Taiwan media reported that Denmark has changed the nationality and place of birth registration for Taiwan residents living in Denmark from "Taiwan" to "China" since March 2024. In response, Taiwan's "foreign affairs department" recently said it has revoked certain privileges granted to Danish representatives in Taiwan and called for a prompt resolution.

Chen reiterated that the one-China principle is a basic norm for international relations and a widely recognized consensus of the international community, reflecting the prevailing will of the people and the broader trend of the times. He added that any actions by the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan would not alter the fact that Taiwan is part of China, nor weaken global adherence to the principle.
