China's nuclear energy transition continues relentless pace, ranking first globally
Cementing its position as the world's undisputed leader in nuclear energy, China now ranks first globally with its total installed nuclear power capacity reaching a record 125 million kilowatts, according to an industry blue book released recently.
The country currently boasts 60 nuclear power units in commercial operation, providing a stable foundation for its clean energy transition, according to the China Nuclear Energy Development Report 2026, published by the China Nuclear Energy Association.
Furthermore, China's nuclear expansion pipeline remains robust. There are currently 36 nuclear power units under construction across the country, a scale that accounts for more than half of the global total for nuclear power capacity currently being built, it said.
In addition to the active sites, another 16 nuclear power units have been officially approved and are awaiting construction. This comprehensive development strategy ensures that the nation's nuclear power installed capacity will experience continuous and steady growth in the coming years, the association said.
The pace of development remains unyielding this year. According to the report, construction has already commenced on two new nuclear power units in 2026, and seven units are scheduled to be completed and put into operation before the year's end.
This momentum guarantees that China will continue to maintain its leading position worldwide in terms of the scale of nuclear power under construction, playing a vital role in optimizing the national energy structure and supporting the country's broader green transition goals.
