An online reality show has come under fire after it was discovered that most of its guests appeared to be wearing digitally added seat belts while riding in a vehicle. This prompted traffic police to warn that safety cannot be faked.

The controversy began when screenshots and enlarged video clips from the show, which aired on Youku, a Chinese video streaming platform, circulated widely online. Netizens pointed out that the seat belts worn by most guests showed obvious signs of post-production editing rather than actual use during filming.

The topic "all the guests' seat belts in one vehicle were photoshopped" became a trending subject on social media on Monday, sparking widespread discussion over safety risks and the responsibility of the production team. The production team has not responded publicly.

Some netizens argued that the guests' failure to wear seat belts while the vehicle was moving may have violated the Road Traffic Safety Law. Others mocked the production team for creating the appearance of compliance through editing instead of ensuring real safety on set, calling the case "digital compliance" and "virtual seat belts".

Many also raised concerns that variety shows and celebrities have large audiences and may influence fans, especially teenagers, if they appear to ignore traffic rules.

The traffic management bureau of the Ministry of Public Security criticized the incident on its official Sina Weibo account on Monday, stating that safety is not something to be staged for others, and self-deception has no place in safety matters.

The bureau emphasized that China's Road Traffic Safety Law clearly requires drivers and passengers to use seat belts as required when motor vehicles are in operation. It added that the exemplary role of celebrities and variety shows should not be underestimated, as they have large fan bases and audiences. Therefore, they should set a stricter example on matters involving public interest and public safety, strictly observing laws and regulations and firmly upholding the bottom line of safety.
