Nikkei plunges 4.9% to close below 8,000 mark

Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Thursday with the key Nikkei index plunging 4.92 percent amid market concerns over the economic outlook of the United States as well as that of Japan.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average, which once fell below the 8, 000 mark to 7,959.01 in the intraday trading, plummeted 415.14 points to 8,023.31.

The broader Topix index lost 23.40 points, or 2.86 percent, to 795.99.
