China should implement regulations and technology standards on self-driving cars, said Robin Li, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and CEO of Internet giant Baidu Inc.

"Most of the existing laws and regulations do not fit the development of auto-driving vehicles," Li said in his proposal for the upcoming annual session of the CPPCC.

The central government needs to draw a roadmap for auto-driving technology, provide more financial support and encourage Chinese automakers and Internet companies to build joint research and development projects, according to Li.

Baidu tested its auto-driving technology in late 2015 and is planning to put driverless cars on the road in the next three years.

Li, 47, brought three proposals this year. He also suggested that the government bring down Internet connection fees and open more airspace for commercial aviation.

Meng Jing in Beijing contributed to this story.
