Long march to protest lay-offs

SHIJIAZHUANG: More than 1,000 people began a 140-km hike from Baoding, Hebei province, to Beijing on Friday to protest job losses at a textile company.

The hike started at 8 am, from the Hebei Baoding Yimian Group premises, which has about 4,000 employees.

The protesters, carrying luggage, headed to Beijing along National Highway 107 on foot and by bicycle. They planned to petition the government over the company's restructuring, said a protester who refused to be named.
