Taiwan reports confirmed case of A(H1N1) influenza

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's health authorities confirmed on Wednesday that a 52-year-old doctor has tested positive for the A(H1N1) influenza.

The man, the first confirmed A(H1N1) case on the island, is a foreign national who flew into Taiwan Monday night, local media said.

He is said to be in stable condition.

The doctor flew from New York to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific flight CX831 on Monday, and arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport aboard flight CX468 later the same day.

Health authorities said he had stayed in the United States before traveling to Taiwan.

He developed a fever during the flight, and was isolated for treatment after getting off the plane.

Initial tests results were positive for A(H1N1) on Tuesday. The test results were confirmed on Wednesday by the island's health authorities.

Health officials are trying to trace other passengers and crew who had been in close contact with the doctor during the flight.
