Shanghai reports severe case of A/H1N1 flu

SHANGHAI:A patient infected with A/H1N1 flu has been diagnosed as being in "severe condition" in Shanghai, the second such case on the Chinese mainland.

The case was reported at the Shanghai Municipal No. 1 People's Hospital, the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau issued a brief statement late Friday.

"The health authorities are going all out to treat the patient, and have disinfected relevant places and started medical observation on all people who had close contact with the patient," the statement said, providing no further details.

A bureau spokesman contacted by Xinhua Saturday declined to reveal more information about the sace.

The Chinese mainland has reported 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu, of which 3,577 have recovered, the Health Ministry said Friday evening, adding the flu has so far caused no deaths on the mainland.

Globally, the disease has killed about 2,000 people and infected more than 180,000. It has spread to more than 170 countries.

The Chinese mainland reported its first critical case of A/H1N1 flu on August 13. The case involved a 17-year-old high school student in the southern province of Guangdong who had been in a coma for about a week at the time.

He was later diagnosed with a rare genetic disease named Brugada Syndrome, which was believed to have led to his critical condition,  his doctors said.
