Japan to seek further development ties with China

TOKYO - Uichiro Niwa, Japan's new ambassador to China, said Monday that he will be committed to further developing Japan-China relations and strengthening people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

At a press conference held at the Japan National Press Club, Niwa said that after assuming office in Beijing, what he wants to do most is expand people-to-people exchanges between the two neighbors, which is also the key to promoting mutual understanding between the two peoples.

He also expressed hope that Japan and China will conclude a trade agreement at an early date so that their economic exchanges will be boosted.

At a cabinet meeting on June 15, Niwa, senior corporate adviser and former president of leading trading house Itochu Corp., was named as Japan's new ambassador to China. It is the first time the Japanese government has picked one from the private sector to serve as its ambassador to China.

Niwa will leave for Beijing on July 31.
