BEIJING - Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday rejected an accusation by the campaign office of a Taiwan politician that the agency was a possible source of a cyber attack on it.

The spokesperson of the campaign office of Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for the upcoming election of Taiwan's leader, said on Tuesday, the computer system of the office and some departments of the DPP recently were hit by cyber attacks, and Xinhua was a possible source of the incursion.

A Xinhua spokesperson on Wednesday dismissed the accusation as groundless.

The spokesperson said, Xinhua News Agency, being a global news agency with worldwide influence, has been dedicated to news reporting throughout its 80-year history.

"As a news service provider, we have an impartial and objective stance on the election of the Taiwan region, and we will never interfere in the matter," said the spokesperson.

Hackers can hijack IP addresses to cloak their cyber attack, the spokesperson said.

"However, the campaign office of Tsai Ing-wen, without serious verification, presumptuously claimed Xinhua as a source of the cyber attacks, which terribly tainted Xinhua's reputation," said the spokesperson, calling the accusation a "hacking" against Xinhua in the real world.

"We hereby express our strong dissatisfaction," said the spokesperson.
