BEIJING?- China on Wednesday hailed the success of the 14th China-EU summit held in Beijing on Tuesday, saying the summit yielded rich results.

"Leaders of China and the European Union [EU] had an in-depth exchange of views on China-EU relations, the global situation and hot regional issues. They reached important consensus on deepening cooperation in such areas as investment, trade, scientific research, innovation, energy, environmental protection and urbanization," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso co-chaired the summit, focusing on the current European debt crisis, bilateral ties and cooperation.

During the summit, Premier Wen voiced the country's support for the EU's efforts in addressing the European sovereign debt issue, and he expressed confidence in the euro and the European economy, the spokesman said.

China will forge closer communication with the European side on playing a bigger part in addressing the debt issue, he said, adding that European leaders welcomed China's position.

"The summit has sent a clear message about China and the EU's joint efforts to counter the crisis, deepen their partnership, and boost the development and sustainable growth of the world economy, " he said.

The summit also injected new vitality into the future growth of China-EU relations, Liu added.

To contribute to world peace and prosperity, China will continue to stick to reform and opening-up, and will unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development, he said.

The leaders' meeting had been previously slated for last October, but was postponed as EU leaders scrambled to combat the Eurozone debt crisis.
