The Hunchun forestry bureau has paid 3.66 million yuan ($588,900) in compensations to local residents who suffered losses after attacks from wild animals, according to the bureau's information office.

In the last two years, there were 589 cases in which wild animals, such as tigers and bears, attacked livestock or destroyed crops.

Hunchun, Jilin province, located at the junction of China, Russia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is home to Siberian tigers and other wild animals.

In the last decade, the local government boosted its wildlife protection programs. More residents are aware of the importance of protecting wild animals and won't hurt the animals if they invade their fields.
