Sleepless in China, hotel survey finds

By Xu Junqian in Shanghai | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-09-16 18:33

Over 70 percent of hotel guests in China suffer sleeping problems, according to a recent survey by Westin Hotels & Resorts.

The survey polled 1,500 guests from 17 hotels of the chain in China about their sleeping habits, and 74 percent said that working pressure and financial problems contributed to their sleeping disorders, while 14 percent are kept awake at night because of family issues.

Location remains of major importance for Chinese guests when choosing hotels, with 38 percent saying it was their priority. But 32 percent said that a comfortable bed was most important.

The use of social networks has also had a negative effect on sleeping. Nearly 30 percent of the polled guests say they would check social networks before trying to sleep, a habit health experts believe would make it even more difficult for the already exhausted nerves to rest well, as the survey put it.
