BEIJING - After a real-life "Fast and Furious" car race in downtown Beijing, two people have been detained on suspicion of dangerous driving, local authorities said Monday.

The accident on Saturday night, saw a red Ferrari, driven by Yu, 20, race against a green Lamborghini, driven by Tang, 21, on Datun Road, Chaoyang District. Both vehicles were severely damaged when they careered through a tunnel guardrail, before smashing into walls at speeds of more than 160 km/h, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.

Pictures circulating on microblog Sina Weibo show the totaled luxury cars in a tunnel, with pieces scattered on the ground.

One of the drivers was injured in the accident, the bureau said, adding that both were unemployed.

The case caused quite a stir on the Internet, particularly as "Furious 7", the latest installment of the street-racing "Fast and Furious" franchise, premiered in Chinese cinemas on Sunday.

"A warm-up activity for the new movie, perhaps?" read one comment on Weibo.

"Even 'employed' people drive luxury cars," mocked another netizen.

A Ferrari or a Lamborghini costs millions of yuan on the Chinese mainland.
