Pyongyang won't abandon Six-Party Talks, experts say

By Wang Linyan and Cai Hong | China Daily | Updated: 2009-04-07 07:49

While Pyongyang's rocket launch angered its neighbors and the West, it is unlikely that it will abandon Six-Party Talks, according to experts.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) claimed it launched an experimental communications satellite into orbit on Sunday. The West - which says Pyongyang tested a long-range missile, violating sanctions - is cautious about talking to the DPRK. The Six-Party Talks involving the DPRK, the Republic of Korea (ROK), China, Japan, Russia and the United States, are aimed at persuading Pyongyang to give up its nuclear ambitions.

"The worst-case scenario that the DPRK will abandon talks and restart plutonium production will not come up," said Charles Morrison, president of the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
