Cooperation on floods continues

Premier Li Keqiang and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev reemphasized bilateral cooperation on flood control and disaster relief on Monday. During the second telephone conversation, Li said that China and Russia have conducted close and effective cooperation in the face of the devastating floods in the Heilong River, showing the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

4 migrants die in train crash

At least four people were killed when a cargo train nicknamed "La Bestia", on which migrants hitch rides to the US border, derailed in a remote area of southern Mexico on Sunday. Some local media said the death toll could be as high as 50, and said ambulances were unable to reach the scene of the accident in the southern state of Tabasco because of the difficult terrain.

Myanmar

12 arrested in religious riots

Myanmar authorities detained a dozen rioters on Sunday a day after clashes between Buddhists and minority Muslims in the northern region of Sagaing, police said, in the latest widening of sectarian violence. Witnesses said between 500 and 1,000 Buddhists, some carrying sticks and swords, attacked Muslim houses in Htan Kone village on Saturday, setting some buildings on fire.

Kyrgyzstan

Bubonic plague case reported

A teenage boy has died of bubonic plague in Kyrgyzstan, the country's health officials confirmed on Monday, adding that an epidemic was not likely. The 15-year-old was a herder from the small mountain village of Ichke-Zhergez in eastern Kyrgyzstan, close to the border with Kazakhstan and the Issyk-Kul lake.

Girl, 7, shoots playmate dead

A 7-year-old girl has shot her six-year-old friend dead, with her grandfather's revolver while playing at a farm, police said on Monday. "They were playing together, and in the process she got hold of the revolver, which hit the deceased in the face," said police spokeswoman Ronel Otto. The girl died at the scene, police said.

Husband killed with coffee cup

A Japanese housewife battered her septuagenarian husband to death with a coffee cup after discovering he was cheating on her, reports said Monday. The 61-year-old woman allegedly attacked her partner after learning of his affair, battering him repeatedly with the mug at their home southwest of Tokyo on Sunday.
