China urges resumption of Six-Party talks
China's top envoy to the Six-Party Talks urged all parties to create conditions for an early resumption of the talks. Wu Dawei, China's special representative on Korean Peninsula affairs, made the remarks while meeting his US counterpart Glyn Davies on Thursday in Beijing, the Foreign Ministry said. Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that Wu called for more efforts by all parties to realize denuclearization on the peninsula, maintain peace and stability, and resolve the issue through political dialogue.
Davies arrived in China on Wednesday to meet Wu and discuss the resumption of the talks, which have been suspended since 2008. The US envoy then headed to Japan to discuss the issue with his Japanese counterpart in Tokyo on Friday.
The meeting between Wu and Davies coincided with the 10th anniversary of the start of the Six-Party Talks and the eighth anniversary of the announcement of the Sept 19 Joint Statement.
Both Wu and Davies agreed to keep communicating on the issue.
Regarding a report on Thursday that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea had allegedly restarted a reactor, Hong said China had seen the report and stressed that China's consistent policy is to achieve denuclearization on the peninsula and safeguard peace and stability in Northeast Asia. That policy is in everyone's best interest, Hong added.
