A virus-like computer worm, dubbed "Blaster" or "LovSan" has hit China after first being reported in the United States on Monday.

Ruixing Computer Company, a leading Beijing-based anti-virus company, reported Wednesday that it had received more than 1,000 phone calls from computer users asking for help about the worm infection.

Most of the phone calls were from companies and administrations whose computer networks refused to work because of the infection, the company's service center added.

The Ministry of Public Security issued a warning Tuesday against "Blaster", urging computer users around China to download a patch from Microsoft's web site.

The worm works by exploiting a flaw in Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system used to share data files across computer networks.

Anti-virus vendor Symantec said that it had detected more than 125,000 infected computers worldwide.

The virus was dubbed "LovSan" because it left a note on vulnerable computers: "I just want to say LOVE YOU SAN."
