Legends

Living with legends

Living in Tibet perhaps also means living with legends. You don't know when a custom began, how it was passed on, and why nobody ever questioned it. China Daily's reporter Feng Xin takes you to visit two stones in Tibet that testify to this.

Explore the Potala Palace's secret

It’s not easy taking care of a 1,300-year-old building – not to mention, it was built more than 12,000 feet above sea level – on a mountain. China Daily's multimedia reporter Feng Xin followed one man to explore the Potala Palace's secret and the ancient Tibetans' wisdom.

At the Tanggula Mountains in Tibet autonomous region, you can often see men dangling on power lines along the road. They are the workers building the Qinghai-Tibet direct current network, the world's highest power line.

Monks' debate

One stage, three stars and hundreds of spectators – a monk's debate starts. China Daily reporter Feng Xin was in Sera Monastery, Lhasa, Tibet autonomous region, to witness the whole process. She takes you to find out how the air became quite tense.

Traveling the highest railway

China Daily reporter Feng Xin took the Qinghai-Tibet railway, the world's highest railway from Beijing to Lhasa. Throughout her journey, she'll show you the sites, introduce you to the people, and explore several key train stations.

Buddha, please don't let any beings get sick this year

On the mountains, across the river, prayer flags in five colors wave in the air. They represent the five elements of the nature in Tibet.

To pray, to spread

Pray for things you wish and spread the Buddha's spirit – these are two main rituals Tibetan people practice in the second half of their 15-day New Year, beginning March 13 and leading until 19.

Beating the ghost

The "Beating the Ghost" ceremony, or "Da Gui" in Chinese, an important Tibetan Buddhist ritual, was held at the Yonghegong Lama Temple in Beijing on March 4, 2011.
