Xi urges negotiated settlements at security summit

Xi Jinping urged policies to settle differences and disputes through consultation and negotiation at an Asia security summit held here on Wednesday.

Xi said Asia has come to a crucial stage in security cooperation in which countries in the region need to build on the past achievements and strive for new progress.

He called on countries to cherish the hard-won stability in the region.

Holding 67 percent of the world's population, Asia accounts for one third of the global economy and remains the most dynamic and promising region in the world, according to the president.

Peace, development and mutually beneficial cooperation are the main trends in the region, Xi said, noting that Asia enjoys a rising status in the international strategic landscape and plays an increasingly important role in promoting a multi-polar world and democracy in international relations.

Asia security should rely on Asians

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday security problems in Asia should eventually be solved by Asians themselves who are able to achieve regional peace and stability through cooperation.

Asian countries should promote security in their own country and across the region through dialogue and cooperation, Xi said.

"We should engage in sincere and in-depth dialogue and communication to increase strategic mutual trust, reduce mutual misgivings, seek common ground while resolving differences and live in harmony with each other." Xi said.

Asian countries should focus on common security interests of all countries and build the awareness of meeting security challenges through cooperation, he said.

He urged countries in the region to insist on resolving disputes through peaceful means and oppose the arbitrary use of force or threats.

Provocations and escalation of tensions for selfish interests should also be opposed, he added.

While Asia is enhancing cooperation within the region, it must also be committed to cooperation with countries in other regions and international organizations, Xi said.

All efforts to promote Asia's security and cooperation are welcome to achieve results that benefit all, he said.
