Beijing, the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games, plans to build more Olympic venues in universities to avoid wasting resources after the Games, a top official from the organizing committee said on Friday.

"In view of the post-Games utilization, we have decided to build more venues on campuses," said Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG).

In the bidding process, Beijing pledged to build a venue for boxing competitions in the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

"Some Olympic venues will be located in four other universities," said Liu, who is also the mayor of the Chinese capital.

They include the Beijing University, the Beijing University of Technology, the Beijing University of Science and Technology and the Beijing Agricultural University, according to Liu.

In accordance with the principle of frugality, Beijing has promised to make full use of Olympic facilities after the 2008 Games.

"After the Olympic Games, those venues will serve for educational purposes," said Liu.

But Liu added that the plan still needs the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Federations (IFs).

"We are waiting for the decisions of the IOC and IFs," he said.
