( 2003-08-27 06:59) (China Daily)

Top legislator Wu Bangguo Monday met members of the Committee for the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

He reiterated that the central government will adhere to its basic policy on the territory.

The central government will continue to stick to the policy of "one country, two systems'', "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong'' and a high level of autonomy for the territory, said Wu, who is chairman of the 10th National People's Congress Standing Committee.

Wu said Hong Kong's Basic Law is a basic piece of legislation to enable China to practise its policy of "one country, two systems'' in Hong Kong and to implement the system of special administrative regions in accordance with the Chinese Constitution.

The strict implementation of the Basic Law is a fundamental legal guarantee that will enable Hong Kong to maintain long-term prosperity and stability, Wu added.

Wu urged the committee members to work more actively and effectively.

The committee has six members from Hong Kong and six from the mainland. It was established in 1997 when Hong Kong's sovereignty was returned to China.

The committee is now in its second term.

The top legislator said the central government will continue to give full support to the Hong Kong regional government headed by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, to manage Hong Kong affairs according to the law, firmly safeguard the territory's social stability and try its best to help Hong Kong revive its economy and realize long-term prosperity and development.
