China has been hit by 27 earthquakes measuring above 5.0 on the Richter scale since the beginning of the year, according to the China Seismological Bureau.

At a news briefing here at the Information Office of the State Council Thursday, the bureau's spokesman said of all the quakes, four were in Taiwan Province and its offshore waters, one in the South China Sea, and the remaining 22 on the Chinese mainland.
