UTStarcom, Mitsushita cooperate for 3G development ( 2003-11-01 14:52) (Shanghai Daily)
UTStarcom Inc., a leading player in China's telecom research and development
sector, will launch a joint R&D center for three-generation telecom
technology with Japanese electronic heavyweight Mitsushita Electric Industrial
Co. Ltd, the ZDNet China reported.
Wu Xiaowen, vice supervisor of UTStarcom's Shenzhen R&D center, confirmed
the report yesterday at the ongoing 6th Annual Summit 3G China Wireless Systems
& Beyond 2003 in Beijing.
Declining to offer more details about the new center, he said, "It will be
launched early next month".
Prior to the Mitsushita joint venture, UTStarcom has operated nine R&D
centers around the globe with four on the mainland.
Keen to edge into China's fledging 3G market, UTStarcom is in full
preparation for the country's second round of 3G testing scheduled for next
year.
Like its Chinese partner, Mitsushita lays great emphasis on cross-nation
cooperation in 3G development, according to Taki Hideshi, the Japanese company's
director of 3G R&D center.
He said a unified R&D center is essential for the global 3G technology
development.
His company will focus more on development and manufacturing of 3G terminal
products, he said.
