Teens should look to delta for jobs-HK
( 2003-11-12 09:39) (China Daily HK Edition)

Young Hong Kong people should not waste time in looking for jobs in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region.

"The PRD's demand for Hong Kong professionals is very strong. Hong Kong youth should grasp the chances to work on the mainland as early as possible." urged Woo Tun Oy, associate professor of Hong Kong Baptist University.

However, the job-seeking young can't afford to be complacent about their edge over mainland counterparts. The mainland young are fast-learners, and can overtake Hong Kong's youth in a few years. Hence, the urgency to grab opportunities quickly.

Woo was speaking yesterday at a seminar on exploring delta job opportunities for the young.

The unemployment rate among the 15-to-19 age group is 36.1 per cent in the territory.

"Hong Kong employees generally have better English and computer sense. They are more creative and law-abiding. Their integrity is appreciated by mainland employers." said another speaker, Y.M. Yeung.

The Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement provides easier entry of the mainland markets by Hong Kong companies and individuals. Individuals can set up their own retail shops in Guangdong Province without going through complex procedure that foreign companies are required to do.

"Tutoring jobs are hot in the PRD," said Y.S. Lau, a news commentator, "as more working parents spend more time at work, part-time tutors are in high demand, in particular the ones from Hong Kong."

Mainland parents prefer Hong Kong tutors because they want their children to have a wider world view and a higher proficiency of English language.

The delta demand for Hong Kong professionals continues to be very strong, especially in the fields of accounting, management, information technology, electronics and mobile-phone technology.
