DAB creates a job web for mainland
( 2003-11-17 15:31) (China Daily HK Edition)

People wishing to seek a new career path on the booming mainland will soon have an easy access to the employment environment there through a local Internet portal.

Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) announced yesterday that it would open a new recruitment column on its website (http://www.dab.org.hk) to offer job opportunities in major mainland cities and advise Hong Kong professionals on arrangements for working across the border.

DAB will open the new column on Tuesday and will promptly provide 65 jobs and internship opportunities in neighbouring Shenzhen and Dongguan.

Other than some large recruitment fairs every year, Hong Kong people have a limited channel to access job-hunting information on the vast mainland, especially fast-growing cities like Shanghai which are in dire need of professionals with international perspective and experience, said DAB's vice chairman Tam Yiu-chung at a briefing yesterday.

The new column aims to establish a regular platform to update the latest mainland working situation and job vacancies, he added.

The 65 jobs and internship opportunities to be introduced on Tuesday include 35 job vacancies in Dongguan that range from marketing, hotel management, foreign trade to customer services, with minimum average monthly salaries of HK$10,000 (US$1,282). Work experience is not a must for some of the jobs as companies want vigorous fresh graduates.

The remaining 30 positions are internships at Shenzhen-based companies. Successful applicants will have seven to 14 working days at these companies and they will have the jobs at the end of the internship if their performance is satisfactory.

Finding a satisfying job in Hong Kong has never been more difficult than now as the city is undergoing a painful economic restructuring and facing a still stiff unemployment rate though signs of recovery have been shown.

Turning to the robust-developing mainland has been considered a wise option for Hong Kong professionals who still take some headstarts over their mainland counterparts in terms of international exposure and sense of a market economy.

In addition to the annual mainland internship programme for Hong Kong undergraduates, Tam said DAB would team up with Guangdong Youth Union and an Shanghai-Hong Kong Office for Professionals Exchanges and Co-operation Service to assist Hong Kong people with job hunting on the mainland.
