China reap more golds at gymnastics Asians
( 2003-11-24 11:12) (Xinhua)

Chinese continuedtheir gold sweep on the second day of the second Asian Gymnastics Championships here on Sunday as they bagged all the four golds onoffer in the women's team and all-around events.Chinese were crowned with the women's team title despitemistakes on their favorite apparatus.

World all-around bronzemedalist Zhang Nan eased to victory on 37.975 points, beating heryounger teammate Fan Ye and Chen Miaojie to the second and thirdplaces.

The Chinese team is spearheaded by world beam champion Fan andZhang together with Chen and Wang Tiantian. It collected 112.175points to win the title after their men's team finished atop ofthe podium Saturday. Japan took silver in 107.300 while SouthKorea came third on 101.325.

China, rated the sole team favorites in this tournament, suffered a setback in the second round when Fan and nationalchampion Wang both dropped from the uneven bars. On the beam, thestrongest apparatus for China, Chen badly swayed twice to score a8.650 while Wang fell off the beam.

"It was natural for these young players to commit mistakes atsuch an international event. Although they did not finish thatwell on some apparatus, they were still in a class of their own,"said Chinese coach Liu Guicheng.

Wang made her international debut in the World Cup in France inMarch this year before she traveled to the world championships inthe United States, where China finished fourth in the team event.Fan, 15, the surprise winner in the beam at the worlds, alsomade her international debut in France.

"People talked before the tournament as if we had already wonthe title, which really put some pressure on these inexperiencedplayers," said Liu. "But I am happy that they stood the pressureand did a good job."

Zhang reaped success on all the four apparatus to become themost consistent gymnast of the night. Fan finished behind the 17-year-old Zhang on 36.675 points and Chen was 1.4 points adriftfrom the winner.

The Asian triple champion did especially well in floor anduneven bars, leading the two individual apparatus events with 9.500 and 9.600 respectively.

"Zhang Nan did a very good job today, even better than what shedid in the world championships in August," Zhang's coach LiuQunlin said.

"Her steadiness is the key to tonight's victory," Liu added.Zhang had the same feeling with her coach. "I am satisfied withmy performance tonight. I think on the uneven bars I even didbetter than at the worlds. But I did not fully display my abilityon the beam," said the Beijing native.

Chinese junior gymnasts put on an encouraging performance asthey also pulled off both the team and all-around titles. They outshone in the team with 110.175 points, beating Japan (107.300) to the second place while South Korea (101.675) tookbronze.

Huang Lu (36.60), Wu Mengyun (36.40) finished one-two in theall-round while Japanese teenager Ono Shoko came third in 36.275.
