Top four women missing at Nasdaq-100 Open

The four top-ranked women were missing Monday when the field was set for the Nasdaq-100 Open, which begins Wednesday.

No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne decided to skip the tournament, and No. 2 Kim Clijsters withdrew because she sprained her left wrist this month at Indian Wells. Also absent will be No. 3 Amelie Mauresmo (back injury) and No. 4 Lindsay Davenport (chose not to play).

All the defections mean Serena Williams was seeded No. 1 for her first tournament since being sidelined by knee surgery after winning Wimbledon in July.

Williams is the two-time defending champion. Her sister, three-time champion Venus Williams, was seeded No. 2, meaning they could only meet in the April 3 final.

Roger Federer, who beat Tim Henman in the final Sunday at Indian Wells, is seeded No. 1 on the men's side. Andy Roddick is No. 2.
