Updated: 2004-05-29 14:04

The body of a man who may be one of the Japanese journalists attacked by gunmen near Baghdad has been discovered, according to an official from the Japanese Embassy in the capital.

A recent photo of Hashida, an experienced war-zone journalist.
The body was found near the hospital in Mahmudiyah where two severely burned bodies were taken late Thursday after the attack.

There are questions about their identities because of their condition.

Hospital officials identified the two bodies as Japanese journalists Kotaro Ogawa and Shinsuke Hashida.

However, Japanese officials who visited the hospital were unable to make a positive identification because of the severe burns, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.

Saturday, embassy staff said the body found near the hospital may be Ogawa, the nephew of Hashida, a freelance reporter.

Hospital officials said the two bodies were brought in with an Iraqi, wounded in the same attack, who claimed to be a translator for the journalists.

The translator was treated and released.

Embassy officials have not been able to contact him.

Hospital officials told embassy officials that several Japanese documents were found near the bodies.

The journalists were traveling from Samawah to Baghdad in the Mahmudiyah district of Iraq about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad, according to an employee from NHK, or Japan Broadcasting Corporation..
