Three dead in attack on army, police in Karachi

Gunmen sprayed bullets on an army and a police vehicle in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Thursday and then set off a blast in the area, killing at least three people, police and doctors said.

Witnesses reported gunfire followed by an explosion in the upmarket Clifton district of the southern port city.

The military denied an earlier report from a security official that the city's army corps commander Lieutenant-General Ahsan Saleem Hayat had been the target of the attack, saying that he was safe.

"The attack was not on the motorcade of the corps commander; he had reached his office safely by the time of the attack," local military spokesman Colonel Idrees Malik told Reuters.

Malik said the attack had hit an army and a police vehicle.

A doctor at a state-run hospital said the dead bodies of two policemen and a civilian had been brought in.

Witnesses reported intense firing followed by a large explosion which shattered windows of nearby shops and apartments.

Security forces immediately surrounded the area and police said they had safety defused one bomb.

A wave of militant violence in Karachi last month killed over 60 people.

May's violence in Karachi included two separate suicide bombings at Shi'ite Muslim mosques and the killing of a prominent pro-Taliban cleric from the majority Sunni Muslim sect.

Police have blamed the violence on Islamic militants trying to undermine the government.
