Mexican paralympic gold medalist to receive US$17,000

The Mexican athletes winning a gold medal in the Paralympic Games of Athens 2004 will receive US$17,000 each from the foundation of millionaire Alfredo Harp Helu, it was officially informed Tuesday.

To the winners of a silver medal there will be nearly US$8,600, while those winning bronze will be awarded with US$4,300.

The announcement was made Tuesdasy at a meeting with the press in which it was mentioned the Mexican athletes could win somewhere between 18 and 30 medals.

The Mexican delegation, with 77 athletes, will start departing for the Mediterranean country on Wednesday and have their greatest opportunities in athletics and swimming, as well as in table tennis, basketball, archery and weightlifting.

Nelson Vargas, President of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, said Mexico will participate in six of the 20 disciplines included in the calendar and it will be very difficult to match what was done in Sydney 2000, when the Mexicanswon 10 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze medals.

Mexico has won in the Paralympic Games 198 medals: 63 gold, 71 silver and 64 bronze, and in Athens it is expected to sum its 200 medals in history.

In Athens 2004 the main figures are swimmer Juan I. Reyes, double champion in the past Paralympic Games, as well as Arnulfo Castorena, Saul Mendoza, Ariadne Hernandez and Aaron gordian, specialists in long-distance races.

Perla Bustamante, in long jump, and Salvador Hernandez, with two titles in speed races in Sydney 2000, will also participate.
