Marseille lose ground on Ligue 1 leaders Ambitious Olympique Marseille lost contact with the Ligue 1 leaders after suffering a 2-0 defeat at UEFA Cup contenders Sochaux on Sunday. Marseille, beaten at home by Metz in their last match, slipped to 10th place on seven points, four behind the leaders. Sochaux, who face Norway's Stabaek in the UEFA Cup on Thursday, are just behind on goal difference. They opened the scoring in the 37th minute thanks to a long-range shot from Jeremy Mathieu that was diverted into the far corner of Fabien Barthez's goal by Marseille midfielder Leyti N'Diaye. Striker Santos made it two 18 minutes after the break with a cross shot that eluded a desperate dive by the France goalkeeper. In front of a record attendance at the Stade Bonal of 19,940, Sochaux's Lionel Potillon blasted the ball into the net 10 minutes from time but the effort was disallowed for offside. Toulouse beat AC Ajaccio 3-1 at home on Saturday to move top of the standings on goal difference from Metz, held 0-0 at home by 10-man Girondins Bordeaux. Toulouse, Metz, Bastia, who beat AJ Auxerre 1-0, and Olympique Lyon all have 11 points from five matches. Champions League contenders Lyon, Paris St Germain and Monaco had mixed fortunes. Paris St Germain came from behind to draw 1-1 at modest Istres, again failing to clinch their first win of the season. They lie 14th in the standings on three points, eight behind the leaders and only two ahead of bottom-placed AC Ajaccio. Champions Lyon and Monaco, who host Manchester United and travel to Liverpool next week, registered morale-boosting wins over Stade Rennes and Racing Strasbourg. Champions Lyon won 2-1 at Rennes and Monaco, losing European Cup finalists last season, beat Strasbourg 3-1 to climb to fifth. |
