Bayern Munich survived a scare in the second round of the German Cup, needing a goal in added time from Dutch striker Roy Makaay to beat amateurs VfL Osnabrueck 3-2 on Tuesday.

Westerners Osnabrueck, who play in the equivalent of the third division, put up a brave challenge and were leading 2-1 before their home fans when Peru striker Claudio Pizarro levelled for Bayern with his second goal of the match on 74 minutes.

The game was heading for extra time when Makaay raced into the box and past a defender to hit the winner seconds before the final whistle.

Bayern, who failed to win a trophy last season, took an early lead with a headed goal from Pizarro on five minutes.

Osnabrueck responded through American midfielder Joe Enochs on 19 minutes before moving ahead in the 63rd minute through striker Thomas Reichenberger.

"It was a very interesting game for the fans here," said Bayern coach Felix Magath, whose team are a disappointing sixth in the Bundesliga standings after five games.

"It was a great fight," Magath added after his men avoided an embarrassing defeat. "We made life difficult for ourselves but we won and that's all that matters."

Mainz and Nuremberg, who were promoted to the Bundesliga this season, both went out to second division clubs.

Mainz opened the scoring at Karlsruhe SC but the home side levelled to force extra time before winning 3-0 on penalties.

Nuremberg wasted a 2-0 lead at home against LR Ahlen, who staged a remarkable comeback with two goals from striker Musemestre Bamba to win 3-2 after extra time.

Bamba hit the winner on 113 minutes, five minutes after Ahlen had Brazilian defender Gledson sent off for a second booking.

Two goals from French striker Regis Dorn, including one in extra time, gave SC Freiburg a 3-2 win over VfL Bochum in the day's only tie between Bundesliga clubs.

Bundesliga champions and Cup holders Werder Bremen entertain Bayer Leverkusen in the highlight of second round action on Wednesday.
