Man United beats Liverpool in Premier Manchester United won 1-0 at Liverpool on Saturday, getting a 21st-minute goal from Wayne Rooney on a goalkeeping mistake and playing the last 25 minutes a man short.
Premier League leader Chelsea won 2-0 at Tottenham behind two goals by Frank Lampard. He scored on a disputed first-half penalty kick and a second-half injury-time goal.
Defending champion Arsenal lost 1-0 at Bolton on a first-half goal by Stelios Giannakopoulos. It was Arsenal's third league loss this season.
United recorded its seventh straight shutout and its ninth league win in 11 games. It solidified its hold on third place with 47 points while Liverpool stayed at 37.
Rooney's 30-yard shot from the left wing bounced just as Liverpool goalie Jerzy Dudek was diving to his right. The ball skipped under him and into the net. It was Rooney's first game in Liverpool since his move five months ago to Man United from Everton.
"In massive games, in the big games, if you have a mistake sometimes you must pay for it," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. "And we paid for it."
Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes made his English debut after leaving Real Madrid on Wednesday. Morientes threatened around the box but left in the 75th minute without really testing United goalkeeper Roy Carroll.
Man United finished with 10 men after defender Wes Brown received his second yellow card in the 65th minute.
