Report: N. Korea may have fired missile

The U.S. military informed Japan that North Korea may have fired a short-range missile toward the Sea of Japan on Sunday morning, Kyodo News service and  NHK reported.

The reports quoted unidentified government sources as saying that the U.S. military informed Japan's Defense Agency of the possible missile launch. The government was attempting to confirm the information, it said.

U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it never comments on intelligence matters, and an official at the Japanese Defense Agency said he could not confirm the report.

NHK said the missile is believed to have flown 65 miles into the Sea of Japan.

The launch of a long-range Taepodong missile over Japan in 1998 proved that virtually all major Japanese cities — and the bases where more than 50,000 U.S. troops are stationed — were within striking distance.
