Water price in Beijing expected to go up this year

Beijingers will pay much more for water as the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) plans to raise the comprehensive water price in a bid to further arouse the public's water-saving awareness, the Beijing-based Xinjing Daily reported Wednesday.

The report did not elaborate on how much residents will pay forwater.

Currently, the water price for Beijing residents is 3.7 yuan per ton, including 0.9 yuan for treating waste water.

The comprehensive water price, which refers to the average water price for industrial and agricultural work units, the Party and government departments and local residents, will be lifted from the current 5.04 yuan per ton to six yuan per ton, the report said.

The comprehensive water price was last adjusted in 2004.

Beijing has long suffered from an acute water shortage. Its average per capita water supply is less than 300 cubic meters, which is only one-thirtieth of the world average level.

According to industry insiders, Beijing has been well short of the average 400 million cubic meters of water annually over the past few years. The world average is expected to climb to 794 million cubic meters this year, and 1.182 billion cubic meters in the year 2010.

The Chinese national capital aims to save 40 million cubic meters of water this year as the municipal government plans to implement seven water-saving projects and half of the Beijing families will turn to water-saving facilities.

Figures show that Beijing has reduced its water usage from fourbillion cubic meters in 2001 to 3.46 billion cubic meters in 2004.
