Sun Jing, 41, from Shandong Province, overdosed on sleeping pills in a hotel in Beijing on Monday morning after spending all his money on medical treatment for his son, a leukemia sufferer.

Sun left three suicide notes, one for his son, another for his wife and the last for medical experts.

Sun said he wanted to donate his body organs to whoever in needs in a hope to raise some money in return to cover his son's medical treatment in the letter to medical experts.

Sun's son was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2004 when he was a junior high school student. He suffered regular fevers and frequent nose bleedings.

Sun and his wife were migrant workers in Yantai, Shandong and made less than 2,000 yuan (US$242) per month, the Daily said.

The couple couldn't afford an operation for their son, "we can only afford chemotherapy, which will hopefully extend my son's life," said Sun.

Sun even took his son to Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province in search of a recommended, cheaper traditional Chinese medicine.

The son lost confidence in fighting the disease when seeing his parents' poor financial condition.

He told Sun that he did not want to receive any more treatment, instead he wanted to visit Beijing, the newspaper said.

Sun and his son went to Beijing where the son fell ill again. Sun decided to kill himself to get a cure for his son.

After Chinese-language media covered the issue Tuesday, the Sun family received 53,000-yuan donation from two people, who declined to give their names and contact details.

Many other people also said they would try to help Sun and his son.

The China Red Cross Society also opened an account (account No. 800100921908091001) at the Bank of China to receive public donations.
