Wu Peng bears flag for Chinese male swimmers

While Olympic champion Luo Xuejuan holds the expectation of powering to
victory again for the Chinese swimming team in the upcoming 11th FINA World
Championships, 18-year-old Wu Peng is also looking forward to standing on the
podium in Montreal.
China's top male swimmers, including Wu, have long been living in the shadow
of their female counterparts. Among the total 46 medals including 24 golds
snatched by the Chinese swimmers at the last 10 editions of long-course World
Championships, only one silver is credited to the gentlemen.
After finishing second in men's 100m breaststroke final at the 1998 Perth
World Championships, Zeng Qiliang has kept his achievement unparalleled for
other Chinese men swimmers.
Since then Chinese male swimmers could hardly reach the finals at major
international competitions, not to mention registering in the medallist tables.
However, the rise of Zhejiang native Wu Peng has lifted the spirit of the
Chinese swimming.
As a 14-year-old lad, Wu grabbed two golds in the swimming events at the
ninth Chinese National Games in 2001. One year later, the teenager surprisingly
defeated many Japanese superiors to bag home three golds from the 200m
butterfly, the 400m individual medley and the 200m backstroke at the Asian
Games.
