HOUSTON (AP) _ Colombia upset defending champion Mexico 2-1 on Sunday and set up a CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal against Panama, which ousted South Africa 5-3 in a penalty shootout.

The semifinals are on Thursday at East Rutherford, New Jersey. The United States and Honduras meet in the other semi after winning their quarterfinals on Saturday. The final is next Sunday.

Abel Aguilar netted the winner for Colombia in the 76th minute on a spectacular 40-meter shot high over a crowd and goalkeeper Moises Munoz.

It was only Mexico's fifth loss in the Gold Cup since 1997.

Colombia's Jaime Castrillon headed in a cross from Jairo Patino in the 59th.

Mexico replied six minutes later when Gonzalo Pineda took a deflected pass from Omar Bravo and scored from 15 meters to tie.

Mexico seemed lost on offense in the first half without veteran striker Jared Borgetti. The team captain and leading scorer, Borgetti had to sit out the match after receiving two yellow cards during first-round play last week.

Panama and South Africa were tied 1-1 through regulation and extra time.

In the shootout, Panama's Luis Tejada, Angel Luis Rodriguez, Felipe Baloy, Alberto Blanco and Gabriel Gomez all scored while goalkeeper Jaime Penedo blocked the kick of South Africa's Ricardo Katza to set up the victory.
